Trends often follow the general sentiment of the season. For example, in spring, when the first buds of may start to appear, the fashion world explodes with newer and more vibrant clothing than ever before. In fall, softer colors emerge, signaling the harsh winter to come (okay, well harsh for everyone in the world but Phoenix). For me personally, I don't care what season it is, as long as the malls are open!
Trends can also follow the political world. If Hillary Clinton had been the presumptive Democratic Nominee, there would have been a rush of pant suits going down the runways. Manufacturers also use the candidates faces on everything possible, from the obvious t-shirt to talking McCain and Obama flip-flops (slightly disturbing, I know). This fuels excitement about upcoming elections, and encourages people to hit the polling places for their favorite candidate. This fact is also an example of how the fashion industry has a positive effect on society.
And then there's the obvious source of trends, the Brittney Spears and Paris Hiltons of the world. Though their taste in clothing may be questionable, it's no secret that we take our fashion cues from them. This not only increases their fame (and fortune, if I might add) but fuels the economy. So fashion is not merely swaths of cheap fabric sewn together, but it's what you live your life in. The memories you create, the world you change. Fashion is everywhere. It affects everything and anything, no matter what. And personally, I wouldn't have it any other way!
